If you share an article related to corona on Facebook, the social network will show you additional information about the source in the future. This is intended to reduce the spread of potentially dangerous misinformation.

Since June 2020, Facebook has displayed a message when sharing messages if the message is older than 90 days. The measure should curb the spread of news that may already be out of date. Now the social network has presented a new notice that appears whenever you want to share a message related to Corona.

The notice includes information about the age of the website that published the article and shows the month the article was first shared on Facebook. Above these two details there is also a link to Facebook’s Corona information page. The social media group presented this in March 2020 and contains current information from the authorities and relevant news content from major publications.

The notice board doesn’t prevent you from sharing the article, but you have to take an additional step. This is intended to encourage users to think again about whether they really want to share the article. We don’t want the notice to appear when sharing messages from government health agencies or the World Health Organization.

Facebook’s measures against the spread of corona fake news

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg announced in May that the social network would actively delete incorrect information about the corona virus. In addition, it will not allow ads whose creators are trying to take advantage of the crisis.

However, Facebook itself is also affected by the pandemic: like the company in one Blog post reports, there were fewer content moderators available to the social network than usual in the past few months. The content moderators check whether content shared on Facebook violates the guidelines and finally decide whether a post should be removed. According to Facebook, in the last quarter there was less content that could be examined on Facebook and Instagram due to the lower staffing levels that may address suicide, self-harm or child abuse.
