My clients have long hesitated to recruit by videoconference. Like reluctance to telework, recruiting without meeting the person physically could generate fear.
Today, the job interview by videoconference is democratized in the recruitment process.
The news of recent months, with the public transport strikes and the coming months with the coronavirus, requires us to adapt. It is an exercise that must be taken seriously, here are some tips to succeed in this step.
More than ever, the most important phase is that of preparation.
Recruiter for many years, this morning I had a Skype interview with a candidate who called me from his bathroom. The sound, worthy of a cathedral, and the vision of this candidate in front of his bathtub led me to share some tips for a successful interview by videoconference
Prepare your equipment
We keep repeating it, but recruitment is not only based on your technical skills. Your ability to handle situations is an integral part of the recruiting process.
A candidate who has not tested their material beforehand or who gives us the wrong number makes a bad impression.
Isolate yourself
We can understand that you are at home and that you do not control all the parameters but watch out for the cat which passes every 5 minutes behind you.
Likewise, beware of extraneous noises like the washing machine or the telephone, don’t forget to put it on silent mode.
To ensure that the sound is optimal, do not hesitate to put on earphones or headphones that work.
Put yourself in “normal” maintenance conditions
The example of the candidate who is in his bathroom or who calls us from his daughter’s room with the outfit of the Snow Queen in the background obviously makes us smile but does not send us back. not a very professional image. Get in a place that is as neutral as possible.
Take care of your presentation
Only 7% of communication is verbal, on the contrary 93% is non-verbal. By videoconference, more than ever the non-verbal is essential.
Care of your presentation is a basic element. I remember a candidate who had put on a shirt and jacket and had to stand up during the interview and there I realized he was wearing floral Bermuda shorts. Obviously, this is not fundamental or very serious, but at a certain level of position you have to be consistent with the client’s expectations. Be serious and professional.
Be ready and focused
As in a “normal” interview, by videoconference we will go over your course and validate your technical skills. Feel free to print your CV and turn off your phone. A candidate who goes on social networks at the same time as he does his interview, it shows!
At the end of the interview, do not hesitate to consider the next step and ask the recruiter what the next steps will be.
The best advice we can give you: just be yourself, you will be recruited for who you are.
