Facebook has introduced a new feature that allows site operators to charge money for online events. The events are realized via Facebook’s streaming feature. Later, however, it should also be possible to meet for a fee via Messenger Rooms.

Companies can now request entry for virtual Facebook events. The function is intended to give website operators the option of creating, implementing, paying for and marketing online events directly via Facebook. The paid online events are carried out via the Facebook Live video streaming function. The new feature is in Germany and 19 other countries available. In Austria and Switzerland, the option will not be offered to website operators for the time being.

Until at least 2021 Facebook will not charge organizers a fee. However, the entry fee only reaches the site operator in full if the visitors pay the money via the Facebook website. If payment is made via the iOS and Android app, the organizers only receive 70 percent of the amount paid, as the rest is paid as a fee for in-app payments to Apple or Google. In countries where the payment service Facebook Pay is offered under Android, the 30 percent payment to Google is not applicable – Germany is not one of them.

Facebook plans paid meetings via Messenger Rooms

In addition to chargeable Facebook live events, the social network is also planning to offer interactive events via the Messenger Rooms video conference solution in a second step. With this function, for example, online courses could be held with several video conference participants. However, the feature is still in the testing phase and it is unclear when it will be regularly available.
