Why was I never called for an interview?

See what you can do to stand out in the first stages of selection

If you have already applied for several vacancies but have never been called for interview, this is the time to review some steps and correct possible errors that may be hindering your performance in the initial stages of the selection. Why was I never called for an interview?

1. Because your resume says little about you

This is one of the main reasons why so many candidates do not go through the first stage of the selection process, which is screening of resumes. The recommendation is not to make a resume too short, which only mentions the name of the company and the position you held.

For example, if you’re an accounts payable and receivable analyst, don’t just say that you know how to fill out spreadsheets, but that you’re experienced in tracking budget and bank accounts, etc.

2. You applied for jobs that have nothing to do with your profile

Even if you are accepting any job, CV screening will only consider your application if you have the job profile. If your training is in IT and your goal is to be a “systems analyst”, it is useless to apply for administrative assistant because your resume does not indicate that you have the right profile for this position – even though you may be qualified for it.

3. Because you do not meet all the requirements of the vacancy

When a recruiter screens the resumes, he puts all the requirements outlined in the vacancy advertisement in the search. So when you apply for a job and only fill nine out of ten requirements, there is a good chance that you will be disqualified for exactly the missing requirement. Result: you will not be called for the interview.

The recommendation is to pay close attention to the requirements of the advertisement. If he says that English will be a “differentiator” and you don’t have English, that’s fine. Now, if you want to fill the vacancy it is essential to have experience in logistics and you don’t have it, try to focus on another opportunity.

4. Why did you fail the test online

Many vacancies require candidates to take a Portuguese test or logical reasoning, for example. In these processes, there is a minimum cut grade. If you do not reach this grade, it is possible that you will be automatically eliminated from the process, before being called for an interview.

How to make your resume selected

1. Update your resume

Keeping the curriculum updated at least every six months is very important to not miss out on the best opportunities in the market and also to keep in mind important information that can define whether or not you move on to the next stage of selection. 2. Observe what the vacancies are asking for

Pay attention to the words used in the vacancy ads you want to apply for. If they use “PowerPoint experience”, write the term the same way on your resume – not “PPT experience”, for example. Both may have the same meaning, but the recruiter is likely to use the same ad term to screen the resume. If your resume uses a different term, it is possible that it will not be selected. 3. Apply for vacancies related to your profile

In order for you to be called for an interview, your CV must first meet the requirements of the vacancy, including in the “professional objective” field, which should be similar to the title of the vacancy announcement. Otherwise, the biggest chance is that you will be disqualified from the process in the first stages of the selection.

4. Watch out for too many technical terms

If your area uses a specific language, be careful not to fill the curriculum with very technical terms that even HR does not understand. Usually the selection is made by the human resources area or by a consulting firm specialized in recruitment. If the terms you use are too technical – or too short – they may, by mistake, disqualify your resume. Here, again, the tip is to pay attention to the words used in the ad, as explained in item 2.

5. Always be true in the curriculum

Even if you are eager to be called for an interview, it is not worth lying or exaggerating in your resume to make this happen. At some point your lie will be clarified and you risk embarrassing yourself in the interview or even being fired from the company for cause if you have already been hired.
