Temporary vacancies: increases the number of opportunities

Between January and June 2020, one million temporary vacancies were filled, which indicates an increase of 47% over the same period last year. The data are from the Brazilian Association of Temporary Work (Asserttem).

According to the survey, the sectors that most demanded temporary workers were medical, logistics, food, agribusiness and technology.

And there’s more. Five months after the start of the pandemic, the Association estimates that this type of work can reach 1.9 million vacancies by the end of the year. If that happens, we will have a 28% increase in the generation of vacancies in this category.

Why the supply of temporary vacancies is increasing

According to Asserttem, temporary vacancies have become an option for many companies that are currently afraid to assume the cost of hiring people for an indefinite period.

In addition, we can observe that the pandemic caused an inversion in the seasonality of the generation of temporary vacancies – which, in common situations, tend to appear more in the second semester, when Children’s Day and Christmas occur.

Temporary vacancies in the second semester

For the second semester, the forecast is that 900 thousand vacancies will be filled. According to Asserttem, the industry is the one who should lead the hiring, unlike other years, when they were led by retail.

The Association points out that retailing may have some increase at the end of the year, with the arrival of holidays, but this will depend on the recovery of demand and the presence of consumers in physical stores.

How much of the temporary vacancies should become effective

Also according to the Asserttem survey, an average of 15% of temporary vacancies have been converted into permanent vacancies. Marcos de Abreu, president of the association, believes that this average may be true, but says that it is difficult to make predictions in this moment of uncertainty with the pace of recovery and the survival of companies until the end of the year.

Regularized temporary work

Last year, the government issued a decree to regularize temporary work. The main differences of this type of contract for the conventional contract governed by CLT (Consolidation of Labor Laws) is that the dismissed professional is not entitled to a 40% fine on the balance of FGTS (Guarantee Fund for Time of Service) and also does not have access to unemployment insurance.

Temporary contracts do not need to have a fixed term, but they must be valid for a maximum of 180 days. If, after that, the company proves that it still needs the professional, it is possible to extend the contract for another 90 days. In total, the entire service period of the professional hired as a temporary employee cannot exceed nine months.

Brazil is considered one of the countries that hires the most temporary workers in the world. Between 2014 and 2018, the average was 1 million people per year. Last year, after the decree was issued, the generation of vacancies accelerated, leading to a 20% growth in temporary workers.
