The acquisition of Exagan will help ST meet the demands of various customers in industrial markets in the field of power chips
ST Micro-Electronics has announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire a majority stake in French company Exagan, which manufactures gallium nitrite systems – GaN.
Every other generation of electronic devices requires more power, so the power segment in the industry has moved from silicon to a wide range of semiconductors. Over time ST has built a successful market with silicon carbide (SiC), but GaN and SiC serve as different parts of the IC power market. The acquisition of Exagan will help ST meet the demands of various customers in industrial markets.
Exagan is dedicated to accelerating the electronics power industry of the transition from silicon-based technology to GaN-on-silicon, enabling smaller and more efficient electrical converters to be built. Power switches containing GaN Gan are designed for the production of 200 mm chip slices for power switching applications based primarily on silicon substrate.
